HIP HOP ON A SUNDAY NITE...PART 2

O.K. so last sunday on the Hip Hop show, we did our 2nd and final 2008 year roundup.

Seeing as we fell short of our 60 tunes target last week (we got to 56), I took it upon myself to try and blaze 64 tunes in 2 hours...

Well, I got to 61...not bad though...still didn't get to play everything, but like I said, we only had 2 hours!!!!!

check the show...leave a comment

We only got through 56 tunes (1 verse and 1 chorus mostly).
I'm rolling solo this Week as MK is on holiday so I'm gonna challenge myself to bang out 64 tunes...wish me luck!!!

TRUE HIP HOP STORIES: LORDS OF THE UNDERGROUND

Taking you back to the mid 90's with this one...
The group from Newark New Jersey (Brick City) who were under the wing of the legendary Marley Marl, with production from Marley's protege, K-Def (google him) they released 2 well received albums filled with bangers and another 2 that were under the radar.

Before Lord Jazz joined the group, a young Reggie 'Redman' Noble was their DJ... (some trivia for you there...)

DO IT ALL is still making moves in the biz as he has his own music promotion company that started earlier in the year.

PYRELLI....

Ok, so I'm watching Orange Unsigned Act on T4, and Pyrelli, who's the only Hip Hop artist to get this far in this competition has just performed.

I'm not sure of the track, but I actually thought,'I need this track for my radio show tonight!!!'
After getting the crowd hyped up with the call and response, they seemed to enjoy it.

Then came the judges verdict.

Simon Gavin 'Wasn't so keen...a bit more run of the mill...'
Lauren Laverne '...What you do is very slick, but there's no spark...'
Alex James 'You can't expect people to take you seriously when you have 'Wigga Wigga' (mimicking scratching) on your record...it's 2008...IT'S 2008!!!'

1: Big up to Pyrelli for getting this far in a competition where all the odds are stacked against him it seems.

2: Aren't these judges meant to be experienced in music enough to understand the different types of acts that make different types of music which may not be their taste?

3: Alex really pissed me off as he tried to shit on Pyrelli by mocking this culture I know and love, Blurting out that kinda bullshit is like me saying, 'Alex, you can't expect ANYONE to take you seriously, the bass guitar was invented in the 1930's and it's 2008....' You get my meaning?
What about the song? What about the performance?
Well, while typing this, tryna calm down, Pyrelli didn't make it through to the next round, even though a few of the other acts fucked up their performances cause they '...had a big night last night.' Obviously not taking it seriously...the only reason he didn't make it was because he had scratching on his song????

No wonder Blur hasn't released anything or gone on tour since 2003...But Damon Albarn continues to make records and money with his other projects (Gorillaz...which coincedentally fuses Hip Hop with other Genres of music)

It's like these so called judges only listen to live bands and guitar music....Isn't it all just music??
Fucking dickheads...

AMAZON IS TRYING TO TAKE ITUNES OUT..FOR REAL

By Andre Paine, London

The long-anticipated Amazon.co.uk MP3 service has finally arrived, although the online retailer's download store had a low-key launch.

The service went live today (Dec. 3) and boasts 3 million DRM-free tracks from all four majors and leading independent labels, through licensing deals with the Orchard and IODA. Indie label groups Beggars and Concord have also signed up to the service.

Prices undercut iTunes, with tracks starting at 59 pence (87 cents) and albums priced from £3 ($4.43). The standard iTunes price of a track in the U.K. is 79 pence ($1.17).

Albums available for £3 include chart titles such as Take That's "The Circus" (Polydor) and Kings Of Leon’s "Only By The Night" (Hand Me Down/RCA), as well as back catalog such as Led Zeppelin's "IV" (Atlantic) and Joni Mitchell’s "Blue" (Warner Bros).

Despite the lack of any real fanfare for the launch, the service appears to be complete and resembles the U.S. version. The MP3 site recommends installing the 'Amazon MP3 Downloader' software, otherwise full album purchases will not be possible.

"We're excited to provide our U.K. customers with more ways to discover and enjoy great music," said Greg Greeley, VP of Amazon EU Retail, in a statement. "In addition to the millions of low-priced CDs available in our music store, Amazon MP3 now provides a vast selection of DRM-free albums and songs across every genre you can think of, ready to enjoy in seconds."

Ged Doherty, chairman and CEO of Sony BMG Music Entertainment U.K., added: "Amazon's music services in the U.S. have attracted new digital music consumers and helped grow the digital market. We have high hopes that it will have the same impact in the U.K. Amazon are an excellent and well trusted retailer, this new store can only be good for U.K. music."

However, the arrival of MP3s on Amazon.co.uk does not mean MySpace will immediately sell downloads in the U.K. While Amazon.com powers MySpace MP3 sales in the U.S., a spokesman for MySpace told Billboard.biz there was no confirmed date for when the social network site would start selling downloads in the U.K.

Amazon.co.uk’s tracks are encoded at 256 kbps and will work on PC and Mac as well as any music device.

Rival download store 7digital's CEO Ben Drury responded to the launch today by suggesting that Amazon's arrival in the U.K. download market was "a little late" and commented that its tracks were not of the same quality as 7digital's 320kbsp MP3s.

However, Drury added in the statement: "Amazon's entry into the market is good news for the digital music consumer and will help accelerate the migration from physical format to digital. This is another victory for MP3 and another blow for iTunes." The majority of iTunes tracks feature digital rights management.

The Amazon.co.uk launch follows online retailer Play.com's roll-out of its DRM-free service PlayDigital with all majors on board in October, while 7digital went fully MP3 in September.

ARAB MONEY? BANNED????

Is this shit getting out of hand or what?

I just got word that Busta's 'Arab Money' has been banned on a few radio stations in the u.k.
(including my station, Kiss) I even heard a d.j. on another station was suspended over playing it?
(which I think is weird, why not warn said D.J. and then if he plays it, take action???)

This song has been doing the rounds for at least a couple of months. When I first heard it, I thought it might be a problem, but wanted to see how people reacted to it.

In the clubs, it's all love with people doing the Arab Money dance, people request it on my radio and mixshow all the time...

There's a new remix with a few big names etc (peep it HERE)

But in my opinion, the mistake that blew it up was he re-did the hook, that sounds like (I'm not 100% sure) a muslim call to prayer....if that's what it is...which I doubt, cause Busta aint that reckless, then I'm sure the Flipmode team would've anticipated this.....
Thoughts anyone? Are you Muslim? Does it offend you? What are they saying in the chorus?

BLACK MILK...

Honestly, I'm a fan, BUT people were going a bit overboard with the hype saying he's the next Dilla? (maybe in 15 MORE years in MY opinion) which kinda turned me off, I know he's worked with Slum as a part of B.R. Gunna and a whole host of Detroit legends.
He got ill beats and he can rhyme, but when people hype so much, it takes away from that artists product for me anyway.
After Sound Of The City, Broken Wax, Popular Demand, Dirty District, Caltroit, Fat Ray's album, Music From the Colour Purple (you should really check that out) and various other projects he's behind, I'm fully on board with this artist.

Still ain't Dilla tho...which I know he ain't tryna be...dope artist nonetheless.

From the new Tronic album which is out now...peep the vid.

CLASSIC SHIT ON A TUESDAY...PART THR33

Seeing as Heltah Skeltah's new album D.I.R.T. (Da Incredible Rap Team)
dropped at the end of last month, I think its only right to keep it Boot Camp today...

This shit brings me back to quite a few years ago, the WHOLE Bootcamp Clikk came to London to perform at Alexandra Palace...the promoters were greedy as fuck!!!! tryna charge like 25 quid for a Hip Hop show in the mid 90's...was unheard of...maybe that's why there was only like 30 people tops rattling around 'Alli Pally' BUT the show was crazy!!!! not only was it the 1st time B.C.C. were in London, The legendary Roger Troutman (the dude where T-Pain got his WHOLE style from R.I.P.) and his group Zapp performed a full live set as if the palce was heaving with punters...everybody was professional and gave it their all.
Great fuckin show....
How did I get in? I was on the list...but my people around that time would use the age old pass scam, failing that, the doors would get rushed and failing that, the venue would get broken into, whether via an unattended entrance or via the roof....yeh I said it...big up to the man dem (and some girls too) you know who you are...I remember another time, a couple of my boys broke into the forum via the roof while Pete Rock & C.L Smooth were performing, and they actually watched the show above their heads on stage!?!?! anyway, pardon my digression....

Lastly, before we get into the vids, check out the Hip Hop show on kiss every Weds as myself and Ted bang out 30 mins of Hip Hop classics every show 21:00-23:00....hit us up @ totalkiss.com/shorteeblitz/bigted

Chris Fountain's Birthday

A couple of months ago I was asked to spin at Chris Fountain's birthday party in Leeds.
If you're a fan of the Hollyoaks show, you'll know who I mean.
I was thinking, keep it commercial etc, just make sure everyone was covered.
But then I got requests from the birthday boy for some Grime, Bashment and Hip Hop.
He even asked me to do my Benga blend which I was shocked about...dude knows his onions.
So I got busy, Chris and his peeps were rocking the 'Willie Bounce' and the 'Dutty Wine' (even though I don't think guys should be doing that dance...at all!!!) so I kept the heat going up until I handed over to my boys, D.J. Luck & M.C. Neat.
I wish I could've stayed and enjoyed the party, but I had to get back to my house, shit, shower and shave and be at Heathrow for 6am for my flight to N.Y.C. (more about that in a post coming to you soon)

Shout out to Colin Francis, Luck and Neat, Cheema and Jazzy J who spun on the night also.

Not forgetting Mrs Fountain and of course the Birthday boy...cool people.

The Birthday boy aka Justin Burton

Not sure who dude is on the left...Gemma Merna, Kevin Adams & Nick Pickard

OK, SO I DIDNT WIN...

Just got back in from an evening at Wembley Arena where the 13th annual M.O.B.O. Awards were held.

After getting my hair cut, which actually took longer than anticipated...shout to Lawrence, we ended up talking about industry politics, dj's music, life etc....I got home, showered, changed kissed my son goodnight and I was off, to sit in traffic for 2.5 hours all the way to Wembley.

I got to the venue, usual madness, 1000's of people dressed up to the nines in the latest and skimpiest (ladies, I appreciate all of that) garments.

After finally locating the car park and the young lady who had my V.I.P. ticket, I bypassed all the people who were outside, either waiting to collect their tickets, tryna blag someone else's tickets or 'tryin a ting' at the door.

Once in, I was informed before I even got to my seat, that the winners of the categories were not in fact me.

So I do the rounds of the people I know and like from my industry, (there's not that many, TRUST ME) namely other dj's and a few others with whom I have utmost respect for.
Anyway, a few dj's are giving me the shrug their shoulders 'like bwoy' look as if they heard the worst news ever. LOL

Because there is a industry and dj grapevine that informs everyone what is going on before time, so if they know, I'm thinking the winners must've known too.

The hosts for this evening were the legend that is Rev Run and ex Spice Girl, Mel B who showed the neccessary amount of leg-age. They did a good job in my opinion.

John Legend opens the show with his hit Green Light.

The 1st category, Best U.K. Female went to our girl Estelle which the whole crowd was ecstatic about....

2nd category was Best Album and Leona Lewis took that one, the crowd goes wild....until they find out she's not actually there....then they set the tone for the evening, by booing their hardest.

Taio Cruz takes the stage with 'Like A Star' and does his thing and is quickly joined by the Sugababes showing NUFF leg-age.

Best Newcomer Chipmunk took that one easily as he made A LOT of noise last year and this year.
He beat Skepta, but Skepta is not really a newcomer, mainstream are just finding out who he is though...

Best Reggae act: Hands down, Mr 'Gangsta For Life' Mavado had the place going nuts...til they found out he wasn't there, so the boos started again, obviouslythey were'nt booing Mavado, I think they were actually booing M.O.B.O. but that was quickly quashed by 1xtra's Dancehall resident, Robbo Ranx who explained he was on the 'Gully Side' and he was thankful of his award.

After a few more awards, Estelle took the stage to killed it with American Boy and Substitute Lover.

Best Hip Hop (best Hip Hop What? artist? album? song?) went to Lil Wayne, love him or hate him, it was his year. But then he wasn't there to accept the award either, so the booing commences.
Jay Sean Tried to defend it, citing him as one of the, or the 'Best Rapper Alive' (to you maybe mate...not hating in the least! he's good, but not THAT GOOD....if it's about the record sales, then where do M.C. Hammer or Vanilla Ice fit in with that argument then? but i digress....another time...)

Best Gospel goes to Jahaziel which he was the only person I heard of in that category, so big up! NOT beacause he was the only one I've heard of, he's a good artist period.

Best Video: Leona Lewis-again, more boos. Collecting the award on her behalf was 80's pop annoyance Sinitta, who seeing that Robbo Ranx did well to silence the chaos earlier, thought she'd try to do the same, with her...'When Simon and I discovered Leona...'bullshit. BOOOOOO!!!
2 things...
1: Didn't Leona WIN X Factor? and wasn't THAT how she was discovered?? and,
2: No one cares what you have to say really, so just say 'Thank you, on behalf of Leona' or words to that effect and stop tryna beg fame from someone else's talent.
Phew, anyway....

Flo-rida took the stage and performed his hit Low.
At that time, I put a call in to KISS fm to let the listeners know what had gone on so far as Ted was flying solo tonight, while I went to Wembley.

So here comes the category I was waiting for, up until I got there anyway....

Best Club D.J. Westwood, Boooooos.
I was thinking, 'wait a minute' he's one person who's actually here...I guess the people have spoken for real.

He was pissed! I would be if that happened to me....

After Chris Brown took Best RnB and ladies lost their fucking minds, the boos ensued when they found out, you guessed it...

Estelle won again with her worldwide hit, American Boy, which took the Best Song category.

Then Craig David jumped on stage when the 'A Milli' beat drops and he does his double time rhyming thing which got the crowd going, even though it was in the fakest, most embarrassing American accent...ain't he from Southampton???
But he had The Stryderman to show him how its done, while fully reppin where he's from.

Best Male: Dizzee Rascal...he wasn't there either, so again, boooos.
The award was picked up by Semtex, who tried to talk to the people over the boos, but to no avail.

Jay Sean did his thing with his live performance.

Up next, the other category I was waiting for....Best Radio D.J.
Trevor Nelson, Trev's my dude and an all round nice guy, no one had a problem with him taking that award, whatsoever.

But, when they read Westwood's name with the other nominees, a crazy amount of boooooing.
I'm like whoa...

Estelle and John Legend do their thing on stage, there were a few more awards given out, and the evening was starting to wind down. Plus my energy was running low, I held out on lunch as I thought we were getting food on our V.I.P. table, we had wine, dried banana chips and raisins and other dried fruit.....

I didn't win, but I had fun, I really don't do this for awards anyway, sure, it's nice to be recognised, but I do this because I love the music...everything else is...meh...
